Westborough (Scarborough) Unitarian Church Affirms Commitment to Peaceful and Lawful Protest
Scarborough, North Yorkshire – Tuesday, May 27 2025
Westborough (Scarborough) Unitarian Church reaffirms its commitment to the values of peace, justice, and the democratic right to lawful protest.
As a liberal religious community rooted in a long tradition of social conscience, we believe that speaking out against injustice — peacefully and within the bounds of the law — is both a civic right and a moral responsibility. From the abolition of slavery to the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality, Unitarians, and members of the Scarborough congregation in particular, have stood alongside those seeking a more compassionate, inclusive world.
We recognise that many of the causes behind recent protests — including climate justice, racial equality, and the protection of human rights — align with our deeply held values. However, we are equally clear that our support does not extend to any form of action that breaks the law, incites violence, or causes harm to people, animals, or property.
We believe that how we protest matters as much as why we protest. Lasting change must be built on a foundation of integrity, respect, and non-violence. As such, Westborough (Scarborough) Unitarian Church will only ever support and participate in demonstrations that are peaceful, lawful, and rooted in a spirit of care and accountability.
Our chapel remains open to all who share our vision of a just and inclusive world — a place for reflection, dialogue, and hope. We continue to believe that change begins not with destruction or division, but with courageous compassion, honest conversation, and responsible action.
